A Tale of Loss and Finding True Friendship
The Snow White Smile
(Senyum Putih Salju)
Sofia is known by everyone in school as a girl who always brings joy. The smile she shows never seems to fade, like Snow White who lives in the real world. With long black hair that always flows neatly, porcelain-white skin, and a gentle gaze, she is often the center of attention wherever she is. No one doubts how kind and friendly Sofia is.
Sofia is active in almost all school activities. From OSIS, choir, to traditional dance team, her name is always listed in every event. Her friends love her, and the teachers are amazed by her tenacity. She is a perfect figure in their eyes, someone who is always there to help and entertain anyone who needs it.
However, behind the sweet smile that she always shows, there is a big secret that she keeps tightly. Every time her friends laugh out loud with her, Sofia actually feels an emptiness that cannot be expressed in words. Every time she steps out of school, it is as if her smiling mask falls, leaving her in a gripping silence.
A year ago, Sofia lost the person she loved the most: her mother. That woman was the light in Sofia’s life, the only person who truly understood her behind all the cheerfulness she showed. Her mother was the only place Sofia could anchor all her complaints, a warm hug that always calmed her when she felt anxious.
The days after her mother’s departure were the hardest days in Sofia’s life. She lost her way, felt empty, as if half of her soul had gone with her mother. But Sofia knew she couldn’t show her weakness. She was the eldest child, the only one her father and younger siblings could rely on. Even though her heart was broken, Sofia chose to continue her life with a smile on her face. For her father. For her younger siblings.
Every night, when everyone had fallen asleep, Sofia would sit in the corner of her room, hugging her mother’s favorite pillow that still smelled of her soft perfume. At times like that, she could let her tears fall without stopping. But, when morning came, she would put on her perfect smile again and prepare to face the day as a strong and energetic Sofia.
Despite her apparent enthusiasm, deep down Sofia felt increasingly isolated. Every plan her friends made felt like an extra burden on her shoulders. Not because she didn’t enjoy their company, but because every laugh, every conversation, only reinforced the feeling of emptiness that never went away.
Sofia wanted to share the pain she felt, wanted to tell someone how hard it was to live without her mother. But she was afraid. Afraid that they would look at her with pity, or worse, not know what to say. So, as she always did, Sofia chose to keep it to herself.
Until one night, after coming home from Rina’s birthday party, Sofia returned to her room. She stared at the photo of her mother that was hanging on the wall of her room. An unbearable longing suddenly hit her. She sat on her bed, grabbed her mother’s pillow, and for the first time in months, Sofia cried loudly, letting all the emotions she had bottled up explode.
“Mom, I miss you,” she whispered through sobs. “I’m tired of pretending to be strong. I don’t know what else to do.”
It was the hardest night Sofia had ever had since her mother left. But that night, Sofia began to realize that she couldn’t keep holding it all in alone. Someday, she would have to share, she would have to open up to someone who could understand the depth of her pain.
And though she didn’t know when that time would come, Sofia began to feel that letting go of the pain might make it a little easier.
“Aku iri sama kamu, Sof,” kata Rina, sahabat dekatnya suatu hari.
“Sounds good!” jawab Sofia, mencoba menyamarkan keraguannya.
Hidden Tears Behind the Laughter
(Air Mata Tersembunyi di Balik Tawa)
That night was a tough one for Sofia. After a long, comforting yet painful cry, she fell asleep with her mother’s pillow in her arms. Even though her eyes were puffy and her body felt tired, Sofia knew she had to get up the next morning as usual, with a smile that she wore as a shield. No one would know about the crying, and Sofia intended to keep it to herself.
The next morning, as usual, she stood in front of the mirror. Her eyes were still a little puffy, but Sofia knew the trick to cover it up. With a little concealer and a big smile, she was back to being the cheerful “Snow White” her friends knew, never looking tired or sad. She put the perfect mask back on, even though her heart had not fully recovered from the night before.
At school, Sofia was greeted with a roar of greetings from her friends. They were planning a camping trip for the weekend at Rina’s house. There were always activities that filled their days, and Sofia knew that if she came, they would expect her to be as cheerful and energetic as ever.
“Come on, Sof! You’re coming, right?” said Rina, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.
“Of course!” Sofia replied with a small laugh. “I’ve never been absent, have I?” she replied lightly, although deep down she felt doubtful. Spending time with her friends was fun, but there were times when Sofia wanted to be alone. She needed space to process her feelings, something that was hard to do when everyone was constantly demanding smiles and laughter from her.
Throughout the day, Sofia went through her usual routine of laughing in class, joking in the cafeteria, discussing plans for OSIS activities. But as the days went by, the more she felt that all of this was just a big drama that she was acting out. Every laugh that came out of her lips felt empty. Every conversation she had felt like a role that she had to play.
After school, Sofia walked alone. Her friends had parted ways on the way earlier, and now she could enjoy the silence. Her steps felt heavy, as if all the happiness she had forced herself to have all day suddenly disappeared, leaving her with the sadness that had been pent up all this time. She remembered her mother again, the nights full of laughter that they used to spend together. Nights that were now just memories.
Sofia reached into her bag pocket, looking for something that she always carried everywhere, a small photo of her mother that was kept in her wallet. When she took the photo out and looked at it, her chest felt tight. Tears began to pool in her eyes, but she quickly wiped them away before anyone saw. Crying was not something that should be seen by others. In front of her friends, she had to stay strong.
However, inside, Sofia felt increasingly isolated. Her friends who had always been her escape now felt increasingly distant. Not because they had changed, but because Sofia no longer felt able to share. Every time they joked about trivial things, Sofia felt left behind. Every time they talked about a bright future, Sofia could only smile, even though inside she felt dark.
One afternoon, after school, Sofia decided to go to the park. The park was her favorite place when she needed some time alone. The place was not far from home, and was usually quiet in the afternoon. As Sofia sat on the park bench, the afternoon wind blew through her long hair. She closed her eyes, letting the wind bring the peace she needed.
In the park, Sofia could feel free to be herself. She didn’t need to smile or pretend to be strong. In this place, she was just Sofia, a girl who missed her mother, who was looking for a way to mend her broken heart.
But this time, the usually calming park, instead brought Sofia back to more painful memories. She remembered her mother, how they used to sit on the same bench, laughing together while enjoying the afternoon. The memories came so strong that Sofia couldn’t hold them back anymore. The tears she had been holding back finally fell, flowing non-stop. She felt helpless, and for the first time, Sofia allowed herself to cry in public.
In the midst of her sobs, Sofia felt someone sit beside her. She quickly wiped her tears, trying to look normal, but it was too late. Her friend, Maya, had seen everything.
“Sofia?” Maya’s voice sounded soft, full of concern. “Are you okay?”
Sofia was silent, not knowing what to answer. All this time, she had always tried to hide her sadness, but now, everything was revealed. She could no longer pretend.
“I…” Sofia’s voice was trembling. “I don’t know what to say, Maya.”
Maya looked at her intently. “Sofia, you don’t have to pretend to be happy in front of us. We are your friends. If you are sad, we are here for you.”
Maya’s words touched Sofia’s heart. All this time, she had always thought that she had to be strong, that she should never show her weakness. But this time, she felt that maybe, just maybe, it was okay to be weak. It was okay to let someone into her world of sadness.
“I… miss you, Maya,” Sofia’s voice was barely audible. “I’m tired of pretending to be happy. I feel… I can’t take it anymore.”
Maya took Sofia’s hand and held it tightly. “I understand, Sof. You don’t have to be strong alone. We all love you, and we’re here for you, whenever you need us.”
Sofia looked at Maya with wet eyes. For the first time, she felt like there was someone who really cared, who really saw her for who she really was. And for the first time too, Sofia felt a little relief. Maybe, she wasn’t really alone all this time. Maybe, she could share her pain with someone else, and it wouldn’t make her look weak.
That night, when Sofia returned home, she felt a little lighter. Although the sadness was still there, and the longing for her mother had not gone away, at least now she knew that there were people who cared. That she didn’t have to keep pretending.
And for the first time in a long time, Sofia smiled. A genuine smile, even if it was only a small one, but it was the beginning of a long journey towards healing.
“Ayo, Sof! Kamu pasti ikut, kan?” kata Rina, matanya berbinar penuh antusias.
“Of course!” jawab Sofia dengan tawa kecil.
Sepulang sekolah, Sofia berjalan sendirian.
“Sofia?” suara Maya terdengar lembut, penuh keprihatinan. “Kamu nggak apa-apa?”
Sofia terdiam, tak tahu harus menjawab apa. Selama ini, ia selalu berusaha menyembunyikan kesedihannya, tetapi sekarang, semuanya terbongkar. Ia tak lagi bisa berpura-pura.
“Aku…,” suara Sofia gemetar. “Aku nggak tahu harus ngomong apa, Maya.”
Maya menatapnya dengan penuh perhatian. “Sofia, kamu nggak perlu pura-pura bahagia di depan kami. Kami teman-temanmu.
Kata-kata Maya menyentuh hati Sofia.
“Aku… kangen Mama, Maya,” suara Sofia hampir tak terdengar. “Aku capek pura-pura bahagia. Rasanya… aku nggak kuat lagi.”
Maya meraih tangan Sofia dan menggenggamnya erat. “Aku ngerti, Sof.
The Fall of the Wall of Alienation
(Runtuhnya Tembok Keterasingan)
That morning, Sofia woke up with a different feeling than the previous days. The tears she shed with Maya in the park yesterday afternoon seemed to provide a little relief, although the pain was still there. However, for the first time since her mother left, she felt less alone. Although there were still deep wounds, at least now there was someone who knew about the true feelings that she had hidden behind smiles and laughter.
Sofia sat on the edge of the bed, contemplating. Her thoughts drifted back to her mother, to the sweet memories they had always shared. The memories were painful, but at the same time precious. She knew that no one could replace her mother, but at least Maya and her friends were there for her. They were the reason Sofia had to keep getting up.
When she arrived at school, Sofia’s steps felt lighter. However, even though there was a feeling of relief after talking to Maya, anxiety still haunted her. Had Maya told everything to her other friends? Would they treat her differently now? Sofia was worried that if her friends found out now, they would look at her with pity, something she really wanted to avoid.
When Sofia entered the classroom, everything went as usual. Her friends were busy joking around, talking about light things that were often the topic of conversation in the morning. No one looked at her with a strange look, no one showed any signs that they knew about her sadness. Even Maya just smiled as usual, without giving any hints about their conversation yesterday. This gave Sofia a little relief.
However, that feeling did not last long.
When the break came, Sofia and her friends gathered in the cafeteria. They ordered food and sat at the long table they usually occupied. The conversation went as usual, full of laughter and jokes. But in the middle of the conversation, Maya suddenly said, “Hey, Sof, if you need a friend to talk to, don’t hesitate. We’re all here for you.”
Sofia was stunned. Maya’s words sounded sincere, but they also hinted that she might have told someone else. In an instant, Sofia felt the wall she had built to protect herself crumble. Her friends began to look at her with concern, but it was the looks that made Sofia feel even more isolated.
“Have you told everyone?” Sofia asked softly, trying to hold back the feelings that were raging inside her.
Maya looked at her with regretful eyes. “I just said that you needed a friend. I didn’t tell you everything.”
Sofia smiled weakly, but her heart felt broken. She appreciated Maya’s good intentions, but she wasn’t ready yet. She wasn’t ready to open up to others, not ready for the sudden overwhelming attention from her friends. They were all looking at her with eyes that made her feel fragile, and that was the thing she feared the most.
“Thank you, Maya,” Sofia said, trying to keep her smile. “But I… I’m fine.”
Sofia felt the air around her grow stifled. The conversation at the dinner table, which was usually fun, now felt heavy and burdensome. After a while, Sofia finally got up from her seat. “I need some fresh air,” she said simply before walking out of the cafeteria.
Once outside, Sofia took a deep breath, hoping the fresh air would calm her chaotic heart. But the pain didn’t go away. She felt angry, not at Maya or her friends, but at herself. She was angry because she couldn’t be as tough as she hoped. She was angry because her chaotic feelings had made her even more isolated from the people she cared about.
Sofia walked to the school garden, a place she always went to when she needed peace. This time, her steps felt heavy. Her head was full of thoughts that were racing, and she didn’t know what to do. On one hand, she knew her friends cared. They just wanted to help her. But on the other hand, Sofia felt that the attention only made the wound in her heart open wider.
When she arrived at the park, Sofia sat under a large shady tree. The place was always calming, and this time she hoped to find a little peace there. But when she sat alone, the feeling of emptiness came over her again. She felt as if she was trapped in a world full of laughter and jokes, while her heart was still filled with sadness that would not go away.
Suddenly, Sofia heard footsteps approaching. She turned her head and saw Rina, one of her close friends, sitting next to her. Rina said nothing, just sat quietly beside Sofia, letting the silence speak.
Sofia wanted to say that she was fine, wanted to reassure Rina that everything would return to normal. But this time, she felt too tired to pretend. Finally, without saying anything, Sofia just lowered her head and let her tears fall.
Rina, without saying a word, reached out her hand and embraced Sofia. In that embrace, Sofia felt the wall that she had built to hold back her feelings slowly collapse. She let herself cry, without feeling ashamed or afraid of being judged. For the first time, Sofia felt that maybe, sharing her sadness with her friends was not a weakness. Maybe, it was the strength she had needed all this time.
Sofia’s tears became heavier, but this time, she felt a little more relieved. In Rina’s arms, she felt the warmth she had been looking for. Warmth that could not replace her mother’s presence, but at least it could make her feel less alone.
After a while, Sofia’s tears subsided. She lifted her head and looked at Rina, who looked back at her with a soft smile.
“You don’t have to be strong alone, Sofia,” Rina said softly. “We are all here for you. You don’t have to bear everything alone.”
Rina’s words calmed Sofia’s heart. For the first time, she felt that maybe, she had been wrong all this time. Maybe, sharing her sadness did not mean she was weak. Maybe, by sharing, she could find the strength that had been lost all this time.
Sofia took a deep breath and nodded. Although the pain was not completely gone, she felt a little stronger. She knew that this was a long journey, and there would be days when she would feel weak again. But now, Sofia did not feel alone. Her friends were by her side, and for the first time, she was ready to accept their help.
That night, Sofia went home feeling lighter. Although the sadness was still there, she knew that she no longer had to face it all alone.
Ketika Sofia memasuki kelas, semuanya berjalan seperti biasa.
“Aku cuma bilang kalau kamu lagi butuh teman. Aku nggak cerita semuanya, kok.”
Sofia tersenyum lemah, tapi hatinya terasa hancur. Ia menghargai niat baik Maya, tapi ia belum siap.
“Terima kasih, Maya,” Sofia berkata sambil berusaha tetap tersenyum. “Tapi aku… aku baik-baik saja.”
Tiba-tiba, Sofia mendengar langkah kaki mendekat.
Kamu nggak perlu menanggung semuanya sendirian.”
Kata-kata Rina menenangkan hati Sofia.
The Long Road to Recovery
(Jalan Panjang Menuju Pemulihan)
That day, Sofia woke up earlier than usual. She sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the mirror in front of her. Her face looked a little different, her eyes puffy from crying yesterday in Rina’s arms. However, for the first time after weeks of being immersed in sadness, Sofia felt a small glimmer of hope appear in her heart. Although the feeling of loss had not completely disappeared, she felt like she had taken the first step towards recovery.
Sofia took a deep breath, deciding to dare to face today with her head held high. It wasn’t easy to open up, especially in front of her friends who had always considered her a strong and cheerful figure. However, yesterday in the park, Sofia realized that being strong didn’t mean having to bear everything alone. There was strength in vulnerability. There was strength in sharing the burden.
At school, the atmosphere seemed normal. Her friends joked around like every day, but this time, Sofia saw it from a different perspective. Instead of feeling isolated, she began to feel that even though they didn’t fully understand what she was going through, they still cared. That was enough for Sofia to feel a little more comfortable being among them.
When the bell rang for recess, Sofia returned to the cafeteria with her friends. They sat at the same table as yesterday, but this time the atmosphere was different. There were no pitying looks, no feelings of alienation. Everything felt lighter. Even Maya, who Sofia had initially worried about because she had talked about her personal problems to the others, looked more relaxed. It was as if they all silently agreed that Sofia did not need to be treated differently.
Suddenly, in the middle of their conversation, Dita, one of Sofia’s close friends, looked at her and said, “Sof, tomorrow we have a Mother’s Day event at school. Do you want to sing with us?”
Sofia was silent for a moment. She knew that attending an event like that would remind her of her mother, the loss she had been avoiding. However, she also knew that hiding from the memories would not make it better. Her mother might be gone, but the memories of her were a part of Sofia’s life, a part of her that would never go away.
“I’ll go,” Sofia finally answered, with a thin but sincere smile. “But I can’t promise that my voice is good, okay?”
Her friends chuckled, and the atmosphere was cheerful again. Although simple, Sofia’s decision to join the event was a big step. She knew that the pain of losing her mother would not go away overnight, but she also knew that her mother would want to see her move forward, not wallow in sadness.
Mother’s Day arrived quickly. Sofia wore her white and blue uniform, and walked to school with mixed feelings. On one hand, she was happy to be able to participate in the event with her friends. However, on the other hand, every song they would sing, every word of the poem they would read, felt like it was cutting open the wound in her heart again. The deep longing for her mother resurfaced, haunting Sofia’s every step.
When she arrived at the school hall, Sofia saw many students and teachers had gathered. The small stage in front of the hall had been decorated with flowers and pictures with a Mother’s Day theme. Sofia saw her friends had gathered near the stage, and they waved at her enthusiastically. She returned their smiles, even though her heart still felt heavy.
The event began with a speech from the principal, followed by performances from various classes. Some performed drama, poetry readings, and some sang songs about mothers. When it was Sofia’s group’s turn to perform, her heart was beating fast. This was a tough moment for her. The song they were going to sing was about a mother’s love, something Sofia missed so much.
As the microphone was held and the music started to play, Sofia tried to control her emotions. She sang with her friends, but her voice sounded a little shaky. Her eyes began to tear up, and memories of her mother flooded her mind. Her mother’s gentle face, her smile that always calmed her, and her warm hugs when Sofia felt sad. All of that was now just memories.
In the middle of the song, Sofia’s tears finally fell. She couldn’t hold it back anymore. However, instead of stopping, Sofia continued singing. Even though tears were streaming down her cheeks, she sang every lyric with feeling. Her voice might not be perfect, but from the bottom of her heart, she felt that the song was her last offering for her mother.
Her friends, who saw Sofia crying, continued their singing, giving their support without words. They knew how hard this moment was for Sofia, but they also knew that this was part of her healing process.
When the song ended, applause echoed throughout the hall. Sofia lowered her head, trying to hide her tears, but at the same time, she felt relieved. It was as if, by singing the song, she had released some of the pain that had been pressing on her heart. She had conveyed her longing, even though her mother could no longer hear her.
After getting off the stage, Maya immediately approached Sofia and hugged her tightly. “You did great, Sof,” Maya whispered in her ear. “I’m sure your mother is proud of you.”
Sofia returned the hug, her tears still flowing. But this time, her tears were not only because of sadness. There was a feeling of relief, a feeling that she had done something important, something that would make her mother smile from heaven.
After school, Sofia felt a little lighter. Although the feeling of loss was still there, she felt that she had taken an important step in her healing process. She knew that this journey was not over. There would be days when the longing would come back to haunt her, and there would be moments when she felt fragile. However, she also knew that she did not have to face it all alone.
Sofia walked home with a smile on her face. She felt closer to her friends, stronger in facing the feelings that she had kept to herself. Rina, Maya, and her other friends were her source of strength. They were a reminder that in life, we do not always have to face everything alone. There are people around us who are ready to support us, even when we feel most fragile.
Sofia paused for a moment in front of her house, looking up at the sky that was starting to turn red. In her heart she whispered. “Mom, I will continue to be able to fight. I will stay strong. Thank you for giving me irreplaceable love.”
And with that feeling, Sofia stepped into her house, ready to face the next days with more confidence. Even though the journey is still long, Sofia knows that she has found the strength to keep moving forward.
